Gawker has obtained e-mails and photos that western New York congressman Chris Lee, a Republican who is married with one kid, reportedly sent to a 34-year-old woman who posted on Craigslist’s “Women Seeking Men” section. Lee presented himself to the woman as a “fit fun classy” divorced lobbyist, but she broke off communication and alerted the appropriate authorities (Gawker) when she Googled him and discovered he was lying. Lee’s office claims his e-mail, and apparently his BlackBerry, which for some reason contained a photo of Lee flexing shirtless in front of a mirror, were hacked.
Update: So much for “reportedly.” Lee resigned this afternoon, offering the following statement:
“It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York,” he wrote in his announcement. “I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.”
