Brazil Legalizes Civil Unions for Gay Couples

Despite protests from the Catholic Church (which boasts more members in Brazil than any other country), the nation's highest court ruled almost unanimously (one justice abstained) that gay couples must be granted the same legal rights as straight couples — though they stopped short of ruling that such unions had to be termed "marriages."
