Conning Cab Driver Faces Fraud Charges

By

On Tuesday, taxi driver Wasim Khalid Cheema returned to New York from Kansas City, Missouri, to face charges of defrauding more than 2,500 passengers out of around $12,000 on cab fares. Cheema allegedly did the scamming by setting his meter at a suburban taxi rate — which is double the regular city rate. The Taxi and Limousine Commission's investigation into Cheema was part of a wider look into rate practices, which eventually led to an additional 45 cabdrivers pleading guilty to the same behavior.
