Mayor Bloomberg’s Mother, Charlotte, Dead at Age 102

Charlotte Bloomberg, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s mother, died in Medford, Massachusetts, on Sunday at age 102, the New York Post reports. At age 100, Charlotte said she used e-mail, carried a cell phone, and still recalled the day electricity first came into her neighborhood, but she appeared in public less and less over the past few years. According to the Daily News, Charlotte was “enormously proud” of her son, but his wealth and fame were not the qualities she found most impressive. Bloomberg frequently sought his mother’s wisdom, repeating her belief that one shouldn’t let success go to his head. In a statement, the mayor said, “As the center of our family, our mother’s unimpeachable integrity, fierce independence, and constant love were gifts that profoundly shaped our lives and the lives of many who knew her.”
