The Irish are a literary people. Even the murderous mobsters among us apparently retain an ambient affection for books, at least judging from Whitey Bulger's favorite New York City meeting place: Patience and Fortitude, the lion statues outside the main branch of the New York Public Library. There is, however, no evidence on whether Bulger set foot inside or rather simply used it as a place to connect up with members of his extensive, violent criminal organization. Well, we can't all be Yeats.[City Room/NYT]
