Instead of continuing to lose in the ratings to Today and Good Morning America, CBS wants its own combination of The View and Morning Joe in the day’s early hours, so they’ve hired interviewer extraordinaire Charlie Rose and Oprah bestie Gayle King to join the show’s current personalities. As the New York Times reports, neither Rose nor King “are proven ratings draws,” hosting on PBS and OWN, respectively, but both are popular in media circles. King will handle the fluff beginning at 8 a.m., while Rose is due to start hard news coverage at seven. While a CBS exec joked that Rose won’t have a curfew, the Times notes that he’s “a mainstay on the Manhattan cocktail party circuit,” echoing a “Page Six” item from last month: “Charlie’s never woken up before 10 a.m.,” according to one source. “He’s one of New York’s great night owls.” An assistant somewhere is getting a fun new assignment.
