Some 1,000 semi-insane people spent New Year's Day at Coney Island, running into the water at 1 p.m. for the annual Polar Bear Plunge. The temperature was under 50 degrees, but at least it was sunny, and we had a photographer on hand to capture the madness, which included grown men in diapers, a surprising number of smiles, and (like most recent mass gatherings) an appearance by some Occupy protesters, sign and all.BEGIN SLIDESHOW
