NYPD Officer Thomas Richards narrowly escaped being shot during a Lower East Side gun fight in the morning's wee hours when a suspect fired at him, hitting his belt and denting an extra ammunition magazine. The suspect fled and began firing after two officers approached him, and was eventually shot in the leg and apprehended. Police Commissioner Kelly said the bullet missed Richards's stomach by an inch: "The magazine may have well saved his life."
