A down economy tends to hit indie Brooklyn theater troupes the hardest. But now, one group has come up with a cunning idea to get its shows put up all across the city. The two-women-one-man trio will move you into your new apartment — for free. But, in exchange, you have to let them perform a 40-minute play in your new living room. As O’Hagan Blades, Charles Gariepy, and Cordelia Istel put it on their website, “We want to transform the often exhausting, stressful, and anxiety-filled moving day into a surprisingly pleasant and ultimately reflective experience.”

Their idea’s pretty ingenious, exploiting two of New Yorkers’ least-favorite things: moving and paying for things. The gang calls itself Rudy’s Meritocracy, and the trio’s show is titled THISISMYREALLIFE, which seems Brooklyn-indie-theater-appropriate. And, yes, the play itself is about moving.

We don’t know if this yet qualifies for a Times trend story, but there may be a small catch here. According to the group’s Twitter, its “tallest member is 5’10 with shoes on.”
