LIRR Riders Will No Longer Be Able to Drink on the Train in the Middle of the Night

BETHPAGE, NY - AUGUST 27: Riders get ready to board a Long Island Rail Road train prior to the planned noon shutdown on August 27, 2011 in Bethpage, New York. Irene, now a Category 1 hurricane, has made landfall in North Carolina on its way up the eastern seaboard. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

The railroad has announced a ban on alcoholic beverages between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. on weekend trains. The idea is to cut down on fun and — more importantly — attacks on LIRR employees, two of whom were assaulted by drunk people last month. [NYP]
