100-Year-Old Galapagos Islands Tortoise Lonesome George Dies

George being George.

Lonesome George is lonesome no more. He's gone to tortoise heaven to join his ancestors. Discovered in 1972 in roughly his sixties on the Galapagos island of Pinta by a Hungarian scientist, the giant tortoise was believed to be the last living member of Geochelone abigdoni species. According to CBS, "various mates had been provided for Lonesome George over the years in unsuccessful attempts to keep his subspecies alive." Not a bad way for George to live out his golden years.
