A few months after she was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter and dubbed the “most hated woman in America,” Casey Anthony’s team shopped a $750,000 interview special to multiple TV networks. Shortly after they all passed, Anthony went into seclusion (for real this time — no bizarre YouTube videos allowed). Now, just when Nancy Grace thought it was safe to move on to another alleged criminal begging for a catchy nickname, Anthony has resurfaced on Piers Morgan Tonight.
Anthony didn’t actually appear on camera for the odd interview. Instead, Morgan chatted with her by phone before the show, then related her comments to her lawyer in studio. When Morgan asked Anthony to clear up the biggest misconceptions about her, she said:
>Obviously I didn’t kill my daughter. If anything, there’s nothing in this world l’ve ever been more proud of, and there’s no one I loved more than my daughter. She’s my greatest accomplishment.
Her lawyer, Cheney Mason, found it notable that she said this, “Without and prompting. Without any rehearsal,” though it seems like the one note anyone would be sure to hit in their first post-acquittal interview.
Anthony told Morgan that she’s come to understand that she didn’t do much to help her case with law enforcement or the public. She explained:
I’ve looked back at some of the interviews [I] did and the way I’ve come across. It’s horrible. It looks absolutely horrible. And I’m ashamed in many ways of the person that I was because even then that wasn’t who I am.
She also gave herself credit for refraining from selling her story to the highest bidder:
I’m not making gazillions of dollars at the hands of other people, or trying to sell myself to anyone willing to throw a couple of dollars at me.
However, Mason left the door ajar for the sleazy tell-all the American people were promised, saying, “When the time comes she will have her story to tell.”
