The MTA estimates that riders who hop on city buses through less traditional means rip off the the agency to the tune of about $50 million annually, triple what the agency previously believed, according to the Daily News. “This is situation we have to get under control,” said MTA board member Allen Cappelli. “Not only is it a significant amount of revenue, but you’re allowing people to behave in a lawless manner.” Solutions include increased NYPD enforcement and thousands of riders suddenly developing the urge to pay.
