Yesterday we learned about the Elmo impersonator whom police tossed from the Central Park Zoo for his xenophobic and anti-Semitic rants, and today the Times reports that the deranged costumed monster harassed not only passerby but also other Elmo impersonators. Luis, a 25-year-old Peruvian immigrant who's worn the Elmo uniform for about six months, said of the fallen Elmo, “He would stop and say that we were all illegal immigrants and that people shouldn’t have their photos taken with us."
Police said on Monday that Bad Elmo has been taken for a psychological evaluation. In the meantime, Luis and another Elmo have staked out well-trafficked spots in Times Square, hoping to give tourists and youngsters a reason to take a picture and give a tickle, rather than getting chummy with Cookie Monster (who has some public relations issues of his own to deal with).
Watch Bad Elmo in action and you'll see why the Elmo community is reeling right now. (As the Times notes, it's not certain that the Elmo in the video is the same one arrested for the disturbance, but it feels pretty safe to make that assumption.)
