After the protracted race for Charlie Rangel's seat in Congress, Democrat Adriano Espaillat announced his intention Wednesday to seek reelection to the New York State Senate. Speaking at a meeting of the Northern Manhattan Democrats for Change and the Friends of Adriano Espaillat in Fort George Presbyterian Church about the narrow contest between him and the 21-term Congressman Rangel, as well as his desire to endure another election battle, Espaillat said, “The fire has not been put out. The hope you had has to persist. The unity has to always survive.”
Politicker reports that Espaillat added, “You know, I’m still at fighting weight. It was just a couple weeks ago." Indeed there will no punches pulled in Espaillat's race against Guillermo Linares who initially backed Espaillat’s congressional campaign but changed to Team Rangel in May; now Rangel will return the favor by supporting Linares as well as Linares's daughter Mayra's candidacy for the Assembly, in the seat that her father is vacating. It's like musical chairs only Rangel will attempt to influence chair occupancy after claiming the throne.
