The near feces contamination of the Hudson River won't spell doom for the New York City Ironman, nor will a participant's death during the city's inaugural race this past Saturday. The local event director told the Times that it's economics, stupid. Likewise, the vice-president for North American operations for Ironman said the company was debating whether to terminate the race on account of complex logistics and a sizable increase in participation fees, which spiked from $895 to $1,200 for the 2013 race. Now that the company has suspended registration for next year's event, the city and athletes are officially on notice that the race may be no more.
