Your New Facebook Friend Might Be an Undercover NYPD Officer

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly has issued the department’s first guidelines concerning officers’ use of social media during investigations. The Daily News reports that per Kelly’s memo, “officers involved in probes involving social media may register their aliases with the department and use a department-issued laptop whose Internet-access card can’t be traced back to the NYPD.” At least one legal commenter is wary of the department permitting the practice, saying, “Police infiltration of social media should be closely regulated.” So everyone is free to Facebook-stalk others in total privacy, just not the cops.
