NYC Bike Share to Finally Launch in May Despite Hurricane Damage

The long-promised Citi Bike program was originally meant to take off last summer, but was held back by software problems, only to have its equipment flooded by Hurricane Sandy. Despite the obvious curse, the Department of Transpiration announced today that 5,500 bikes at 293 stations in Manhattan and Brooklyn will be available beginning in May 2013. “DOT has worked around the clock to restore vital transportation links following the storm and that includes putting Citi Bike on the road to recovery,” said commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. “Despite the damage, New York will have the nation’s largest bike share system up and running this spring.” By the end of the year, they expect to have 7,000 bikes on the road, and eventually a total of 10,000, though forgive us for not holding our breath this time.
