Mayor Bloomberg Doesn’t Think We Should Be Publishing Gun Owners’ Names

Now back from vacation, Mayor Bloomberg took to his weekly radio show today to announce his views on sharing gun permit information:

"My instincts would be no, but I can't give you a good argument. The public owns the data. On the other hand I'm not so sure we should go publish everybody's tax return ... or everybody's psychiatric records if they have dealings with a public hospital. Do we really want that?"

Despite his somewhat misinformed opinion — the New York Post points out that medical records are still private — Bloomberg also noted that publishing gun owner information is protected by the First Amendment.
