A Civil War monument dedicated to the USS Monitor was vandalized on Sunday in Greenpoint, just days before an event planned to mark the 150th anniversary of the battleship’s sinking. The Friends of McGolrick Park Facebook group has photos of the statue, built in 1938, splashed head to toe with white paint, along with the initials J.J. signed on the ground below. “I just got confirmation from Parks Dept that we will be cleaning it up right away,” wrote local representative Lincoln Restler on the page. “Let’s all be vigilant to try to reverse the trend of vandalism in McGolrick.”
