New Giffords Campaign, Gun-Control Ad Mark Anniversary of Tucson Shooting

On Tuesday, the second anniversary of the shooting in Tucson, Arizona, two families affected by the tragedy will link their stories to the renewed push for gun control following the Sandy Hook massacre. Following meetings with gun control advocates and a somewhat controversial visit to Newtown, Connecticut last week, former Representative Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly will unveil a new public outreach program in an interview with Diane Sawyer. The pair have expressed support for tougher gun laws in the past, but the Wall Street Journal reports that they may launch a fundraising effort and call for more specific restrictions on high-capacity weapons. Mayors Against Illegal Guns has also paid for a commercial featuring Roxanna Green, who lost her 9-year-old daughter Christina-Taylor Green in the Tucson shooting. The ad will run throughout the day in areas where there have been major shootings, and stay on the air in Washington D.C. through January 14. “I have one question for our political leaders," Green says in the ad. "When will you find the courage to stand up to the gun lobby? Whose child has to die next?
