The trial of Li Hangbin, charged with second-degree murder for allegedly shaking his infant daughter to death in 2007, is just about the most depressing tale possible. Even if he’s cleared of the crime, Li has spent the last five years in Rikers, waiting for trial and pondering the death of his daughter. But there’s an odd detail to his courtroom drama playing out in Queens: Sitting in the audience taking in the tragic narrative was none other than Katie Holmes, fresh off her final Broadway performance of Dead Accounts. The New York Times mentioned the actress in the last line of its story: “There was also an unusual celebrity appearance, by the actress Katie Holmes. Her publicist said Ms. Holmes knew the prosecutor and was there to watch her.” Hopefully they got a strong drink afterward.
