On Sunday night, reports of a bomb scare at Grand Central competed with Oscar-related quips on Twitter, but officials haven’t been forthcoming with details. At 9:40 p.m., an MTA spokeswoman confirmed to DNAinfo that the Times Square shuttle had been shut down and the 4, 5, and 6 trains were temporarily skipping the station. However, when it came to the cause of the problem, the NYPD referred all inquiries to the MTA, and their rep said to ask Metro North. A railroad spokesman described the situation as “an NYPD investigation,” and said “there is nothing wrong at Grand Central Terminal, which is what the MTA handles.”
When normal service resumed around 10:15 p.m., an MTA spokeswoman suggested that there was, in fact, a bomb scare involved. “The trains are back to normal as of now,” said Deirdre Parker. “My understanding is that it was bomb threat, but that’s all I know. I don’t know anything about the terminal, and the NYPD is taking the lead on it.”
According to the Epoch Times, a man called 911 claiming a bomb would explode at about 9:20 p.m., but a 30-minute search yielded no explosives. Hopefully on Monday at least one of the agencies responsible for Grand Central will be able to confirm that it was just an extremely unfunny prank.
