Coming soon to Lifetime: A female corrections officer in Brooklyn was charged today with sexual abuse of an inmate for having inappropriate relations with a convicted murderer — a crime! — "for more than four months last year in plain view of other inmates, according to prosecutors." The New York Times reports that Nancy Gonzalez, the guard, is now eight months pregnant with the child of inmate Ronell Wilson, who killed two undercover police officers in 2003 and was sentenced to death. It gets more complicated.

Wilson had the death penalty overturned in an appeal and is currently awaiting a retrial for sentencing. The defense claims Wilson is mentally retarded and therefore cannot face capital punishment, while the Daily News goes so far as to say he "hatched a plan to avoid the death penalty by impregnating a female guard."

"I took a chance because I was so vulnerable and wanted to be loved and now I am carrying his child," said Gonzalez. "Why not give him a child as far as giving him some kind of hope." If that's not grim enough, the admission was recorded in a phone call Gonzalez made to her boyfriend, who is currently in state prison.
