Tea Party Patriots Didn’t Mean to Call Karl Rove a Nazi

Right-wing infighting met Godwin’s law today when a Tea Party Patriots e-mail titled “Wipe the Smirk Off Karl Rove’s Face” featured a Photoshopped picture of the GOP architect grinning in a Nazi uniform. “While we may have strong disagreements with Mr. Rove on the future of conservatism, we want to be clear this imagery is absolutely unacceptable and are working to ensure this type of mistake doesn’t happen again,” the tea-party group’s co-founder Jenny Beth Martin told Politico in an apology, explaining that they meant to use a picture of Rove thumbing his nose but instead got the one next to it on Bing’s image search. That’s why we never use Bing! (No, it’s not.)

The “cutting edge digital multimedia political fund-raising firm” Active Engagement took ultimate responsibility for the altered image, which in its original form portrays Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler: “It was a mistake that we made. It was not a mistake that went through Tea Party Patriots,” said a partner at the company. “Obviously, it was the worst picture that could have been mistakenly put in that email.” Well, it could have been Hitler.
