Teenager Fatally Shot by NYPD Officers

Two plainclothes police officers shot and killed 16-year-old Kimani Gray in East Flatbush at around 11:30 on Saturday night. According to the NYPD, Gray, who had been standing with a group of young men on the street, began walking away and adjusting his waistband when he saw the cops approaching in an unmarked car. The police say that, as they got out to question him, Gray pointed a .38-caliber revolver at the officers. They responded by shooting him multiple times in the leg and stomach. The teenager was then taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An unnamed 19-year-old who witnessed the incident told NBC New York that he didn’t think that the officers identified had themselves as police. “It all happened so fast. I didn’t even know they were officers,” he said. “I didn’t hear them say a thing.” 16-year-old Devonte Brown told the New York Post that he heard Gray yell “Stop! I’m not running,” as the cops opened fire. Gray never fired his gun, though it was later found to be loaded.

The officers involved in the shooting, who have not been identified, were brought to New York Methodist Hospital to be treated for trauma and tinnitus. NYPD sources say that Gray had an arrest record that included charges of grand larceny and inciting a riot. “We didn’t know he had a gun,” said Brown’s 15-year-old brother, Akeem, in the New York Daily News. “We were just hanging out.”
