Teen Wears NRA Shirt to School, Gets Arrested

Jared Marcum, 14, was suspended from his West Virginia middle school and charged with causing a disruption last week after refusing to comply when a teacher told him to remove his t-shirt or turn it inside out. The pro-NRA shirt says “Protect your right,” and features a photo of a rifle. The school’s dress code only bans images of violence, not guns, and the teen’s lawyer, Ben White, tells the AP, “I just don’t understand why this teacher reacted the way he did.” Regardless of the deeper debate on First Amendment rights on school grounds, we have a pretty good idea of why the teacher was so jumpy.
