Young American Diplomat Killed in Afghan Attack

Six Americans — three civilians and three members of the military — were killed on Saturday in Afghanistan. Five died when a blast struck the group's vehicle, which was on its way to deliver books to a school in the Zabul province. Among them was Foreign Service Officer Anne Smedinghoff, the first State Department diplomat to die there since the war began. The 25-year-old's father told the Chicago Tribune that his daughter "really felt she was making a difference," having recently assisted John Kerry on his trip to Kabul.
