Anthony Narh, a parking attendant at a fancy Tribeca building, was the only person in New York to die while on the job during Hurricane Sandy. Tragically, but unsurprisingly, an investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration discovered “serious violations” at the garage, including three of four exit doors locked, the New York Times reports today. “The employer did not ensure that employees will be able to open an exit route door from the inside.” The one unlocked door was propped open — also against the rules. A lawyer for Empire Parking, owner of the garage, maintains there is “no evidence that [Narh] was working on the job when he drowned.” The company was fined $5,600 and
ordered “to correct the violations,” which feels too unfair for words.
