The plan for AT&T to erect solar-powered charging stations in the city’s parks and public spaces starting Tuesday has all the tech, green, public-private trappings of a forward-thinking new program. It should be a harbinger of utopia. So why is the image that springs to mind one of those desperate people at airports who fight over outlets and then wind up sitting on the floor? At least if the wait’s long for these things you’ll be doing it in a more pleasant setting.
