New York Democratic mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio meets supporters during a campaign event on July 30, 2013 in New York City. Following the meltdown of Anthony Weiner's campaign due to a "sexting" scandal, deBlasio has risen in recent polls with some putting him at number two behind frontrunner Christine Quinn.

At a Sunday-evening fund-raiser hosted by Susan Sarandon, the progressive mayoral candidate again demonstrated that he is someone who will fight for the underdog by proudly ordering a Riesling in front of a WSJ reporter. "It’s a good summer choice," he said of the oft-derided white (which, like De Blasio himself, has recently spiked in popularity). "I’m not a big cocktail guy," he added. "I’ll have a mojito or something, but I prefer wine and beer." A man of the people, truly.
