Just in time for this autumn’s new movie about Princess Diana: possible intrigue surrounding her 1997 death. Scotland Yard said on Saturday that they’d received some new information on the matter, though they declined to go into specifics. “The Metropolitan Police Service is scoping information that has recently been received in relation to the deaths and assessing its relevance and credibility. The assessment will be carried out by officers from the specialist crime and operations command,” said a police statement. “This is not a re-investigation and does not come under Operation Paget.” (For the non-Diana obsessed: Operation Paget was an investigation that seemed to disprove the many conspiracy theories about the Paris car crash that killed the princess, her boyfriend Dodi al Fayed, and their driver, Henri Paul.)

However, Sky News reports that the information is “thought to include the allegation that the Princess of Wales, Dodi al Fayed, and their driver were killed by a member of the British military…It was passed to the police by the former parents-in-law of a former soldier.” That description is sure to appeal to those who maintain that Diana’s death was orchestrated by the royal family — a theory that was endorsed by al Fayed’s father, former Harrods owner Mohamed al Fayed, who said through a spokesman that he was “interested in seeing the outcome” of the tip and trusted the police to investigate it “with vigour.” Of course, Buckingham Palace would not comment on the news (or “news”), but the tabloids should start going crazy pretty soon. Meanwhile, let’s remember that this supposed breakthrough came from someone’s former parents-in-law, and also that people like John Mark Karr exist.
