Several dozen of Staten Island's wild turkeys face death sentences as the U.S. Department of Agriculture prepares to ship them upstate to a slaughterhouse to reduce the flock's growing numbers. What harm could those turkeys be doing? According to NBC New York, they're making a mess of the South Beach Psychiatric Center campus, where they have "left excessive feces on handrails and sidewalks," as well as blocked ambulances pulling up to the neighboring Staten Island University Hospital. Turkey fans would like to see them avoid a death sentence — perhaps at a nice farm upstate.
