Dick Durbin Stands by GOP Obama Diss He Didn’t Actually Hear

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 16: Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) speaks at a press conference after successfully pushing a bipartisan bill through the U.S. Senate to restart the government and raise the debt limit at the U.S. Capitol October 16, 2013 in Washington, DC. The bill still needs to be approved by the house. If the bill is signed into law, it will fund the government until January 15, 2014 and allow the government to pay bills until February 7, 2014. John Boehner's White House "go fuck yourself" to Harry Reid seems hard to top, but Dick Durbin claims the shutdown yielded a juvenile insult that was far more shocking due to who it was directed at: "In a 'negotiation' meeting with the president, one GOP House Leader told the president: 'I cannot even stand to look at you.'" Oddly, news of this (presumably) unprecedented presidential diss was first reported on Durbin's Facebook page this weekend. According to everyone who was actually in the meeting, that's because it didn't happen.

Durbin refused to name the lawmaker in question, and on Wednesday the rumor was denied by both White House press secretary Jay Carney and Boehner. "Senator Durbin’s accusation is a serious one, and it appears to have been invented out of thin air," said Brendan Buck, Boehner's spokesman. "The senator should disclose who told him this account of events, retract his reckless allegation immediately, and apologize."

Instead, a spokesman for the Senate majority whip said, "Durbin stands by his comments." As Politico notes toward the end of an item explaining how mind-bogglingly disrespectful it would be to say such a thing to the president, "the only face-to-face meeting between Obama and House GOP leaders was on Oct. 10, and Durbin was not present." Sounds like Harry Reid's imaginary friend is up to no good again.
