Itaquerao Stadium in Sao Paulo, one of the twelve massive stadiums being prepped for this summer’s World Cup, was the site of tragedy on Wednesday, when a crane collapse killed three people. “I saw the piece of the crane was lifting, balance in the air, suddenly it started to shake and fell on to the stadium,” said a witness. “I heard a very loud boom, as if an entire building was falling.”
The accident caused “significant damage” to the nearly finished stadium, which was scheduled to host the World Cup opener and is required by FIFA to be finished by the end of December. “Brazil has admitted it is struggling to have all 12 venues ready,” the BBC reports.
