Creigh Deeds Released From Hospital Following Son’s Attack

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds hugs his son Gus after addressing supporters gathered on election night November 3, 2009 in Richmond, Virginia. Virginia voters elected Deeds' Republican opponent, Bob McDonnell, by a decisive margin, reversing eight years of Democratic control.

"I am alive so must live," the Virginia state senator wrote on Twitter and Facebook this morning, his first public statement since being stabbed more than ten times by his son. "Some wounds won't heal. Your prayers and your friendship are important to me," he added. Twenty-four-year-old Gus Deeds committed suicide with a rifle after attacking his father on Tuesday. The day prior, after an emergency mental-health evaluation, Gus was released from custody because there was no vacant psychiatric bed available for him in the area.
