Federal prosecutors announced on Thursday they would seek the death penalty for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing. In its notice of intent, filed on Thursday, the Department of Justice specified six counts that warranted the death penalty, including conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death, and using that weapon. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, allegedly created the homemade bomb that exploded near the race’s finish line, killing three and injuring some 264 others. Tamerlan was killed in a shoot-out with police a few days later. At first, prosecutors had suggested they might not seek the death penalty for Dzhokhar, as an incentive for him to talk. But they’ve obviously chosen a different tack.
