Nearly a Third of the United States Possibly Affected by Target Security Breach

Last month, Target revealed that about 40 million customers’ credit- and debit-card data had been stolen in a massive holiday-shopping-season cyber-attack. Now, the retail giant says that 70 million people were victims of the heist, which also included snail mail and e-mail addresses, as well as phone numbers. Though there may be some overlap between the original list and the new one, it’s still very possible that the hackers got to information belonging to nearly a third of American adults: As of 2012, there were only 313,914,040 humans in the United States, and that includes children, who don’t generally make their own purchases at Target.
