Now her family is suing, and since the national leadership has distanced itself from the unincorporated New Haven chapter, 86 current and former SPE brothers are facing the multimillion-dollar suit. “It’s ugly, and it’s unusual,” said a lawyer for the victim’s family, who believes the larger organization will ultimately be responsible. “I’m sober, I’m sober,” the 21-year-old driver told police at the time.
