Ras Baraka Is the New Mayor of Newark

Councilman Ras Baraka beat fellow Democrat Shavar Jeffries with 55 percent of the vote on Tuesday night to become the next mayor of Newark. Baraka, son of the late poet Amiri Baraka, served as deputy mayor under Mayor Sharpe James and was a high school principal. He’s been a frequent critic of Cory Booker, who vacated the office in October after being elected to the Senate, so Newark residents should probably direct their snow- and Hot Pocket-related tweets elsewhere.
