World News is losing Diane Sawyer after five years, ABC announced today, with 20/20 anchor and Sawyer’s sub David Muir set to take over in September. The transition to the new (white, male) generation also includes a fancy new title for George Stephanopoulos — “chief anchor” — who will head election coverage and anchor breaking-news events while keeping busy on Good Morning America and This Week. That leaves Sawyer time to “concentrate full time on new programming,” producing specials, and continuing to interview “the most extraordinary people in the world.” In other words, cruising, very gradually, into the newsperson sunset.
