Mayor Bloomberg usually refused to officiate at weddings — though he made exceptions for his oldest daughter and Mayor Giuliani — but Mayor de Blasio is bringing the tradition back. The New York Times reports that he’s performed ceremonies for everyone from campaign fund-raisers to his barista. In July, he’ll officiate for the sixth time, which is twice as many weddings as his predecessor performed in 12 years. The Times notes that de Blasio is very publicly devoted to his wife Chirlane McCray, and in an interview he called himself “a believer in the institution.” “The moment that somebody says ‘I do’ is as life-changing a moment as anything,” he said. “Being the person who asks the question is an amazing role to play in people’s lives.” Plus, performing weddings combines two of de Blasio’s other biggest passions: They’re a great opportunity for dad humor, and he gets to make Bloomberg look more like Mr. Burns.
