While U.S. officials still say American troops are not being sent back into combat in Iraq, President Obama announced on Monday that another 300 troops “equipped for combat” are being deployed to address the new threat from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. In a letter to congressional leaders, Obama explained that the additional forces will be tasked with “protecting U.S. citizens and property,” and will remain in the country “until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed.” Earlier this month, Obama deployed 275 U.S. military personnel to provide security at the U.S. embassy, and up to 300 special forces soldiers to assess Iraq’s security forces. The Pentagon said there are currently about 750 U.S. troops in Iraq.
