The FBI arrested Mohammed Hamzah Khan of Bolingbrook, Illinois, at the O’Hare International Airport on Saturday, where authorities say he was trying to board a plane to join the terrorist group ISIS in Syria. The 19-year-old is being charged with providing material aid to a foreign terror group, and will remain in custody until his hearing Thursday. Officials believe he was planning to follow the typical route of flying first to Turkey, and then crossing into Syria over the land border.
Khan is not the first American to try to join the terrorist group. Several have been arrested while trying to leave the country, and a couple have been killed in battle in Syria. Others who successfully joined ISIS are now believed to be back in the U.S. and are being monitored by intelligence agencies.
