Police are investigating a suspected hate crime in Bushwick after a transgender woman was knocked unconscious and left in critical condition by a group of guys yelling anti-gay slurs, according to the NYPD. “When they figured out from her voice that she was transgender, they starting calling her a ‘faggot’ and beating her with a 2 X 4,” said Kate Barnhart, the head of New Alternatives for Homeless LGBT Youth, where the victim was a client, Gay City News reports.

Police say the woman was hit in the head with a Plexiglas board by the suspects pictured above. “It is outrageous that transgender people are still not safe in what is supposed to be the safest LGBT city in the world,” said Barnhart.
