Jason Collins, who came out in an April 2013 essay in Sports Illustrated, announced his retirement Wednesday. He became the first openly gay active player in any of North America’s four major sports and played with the Brooklyn Nets since coming out. In a Players’ Tribune essay, Collins said that he will continue his advocacy work after leaving the NBA.
