A sarcastic tweet willfully misinterpreted by the antifeminist hashtag collective Gamergate cost Gawker Media seven figures in ad revenue, according to Capital New York. At an all-hands meeting on Wednesday, Gawker ad exec Andrew Gorenstein reportedly discussed how Gamergate supporters successfully harassed several of its advertisers into pulling their support from the company following a tweet sent by then-Valleywag editor Sam Biddle they claimed was “pro-bullying.” At the meeting, when Biddle asked how much money Gawker was funneling into its commenting system Kinja, “Denton replied that it was about five times as much as his tweets had cost the company.” Burn.
