The FBI is investigating #Gamergate, the online movement comprised primarily of men who hurl hate speech at women while using an “ethics in games journalism” platform as a way to gaslight their critics.
A journalist at MuckRock filed a request for the FBI’s files related to #Gamergate, and received a response explaining that they couldn’t be released because it could compromise an ongoing investigation:
The records responsive to your request are law enforcement records; there is a pending or prospective law enforcement proceeding relevant to these responsive records, and release of the information in these responsive records could reasonably be expected to interfere with law enforcement proceedings. For a further explanation of this exemption, see the enclosed Explanation of Exemptions.
The investigation’s details are unknown, but Motherboard predicts it has something to do with the death and rape threats many female journalists and video-game designers received during the hashtag movement’s peak.
