NYPD Detective Put on Desk Duty for Berating Uber Driver

The NYPD detective who delivered a xenophobic tirade after an Uber driver dared to honk at him when he failed to use his blinker has been put on desk duty. The New York Times reports that Detective Patrick Cherry, 38, has been removed from his elite assignment with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. Video of the incident filmed by a passenger went viral, and now the Civilian Complaint Review Board is investigating and may recommend further discipline.

Cherry has been on the force for 15 years, and the board has received 12 complaints about him since 2001. The incident comes just months after the NYPD said it would retrain every officer on how to interact with the public, and commissioner Bill Bratton said Cherry’s behavior goes against everything they’re trying to teach at the Police Academy. “No good cop can watch that without a wince,” Bratton. “That officer’s behavior reflected poorly on everyone who wears our uniform.”
