Unpopular Bobby Jindal Finds Perfect Excuse to Leave Louisiana As Much As Possible

Bobby Jindal just announced that he is entering the 2016 Republican presidential race.

Not that this was a surprise; it was foretold that Jindal would run for president back in October 2014, when National Review reported that “according to a source close to Louisiana’s Bobby Jindal, the governor has gained 13 pounds over the past few months. At 5’10”, Jindal has always looked slight; this is the first indication that, with the 2016 election on the horizon, he is looking to beef up.”

The conservative Louisiana governor, like many of the other presidential candidates who keep sprouting up in the electoral contest like weeds — impossible to get rid of, but easy to ignore after a while — has little chance of winning the Republican nomination. Although he will most likely not be the next president of the United States, running for president will allow Jindal to talk to voters who like him or have no opinions about him — a resource that is in short supply in his home state. His approval rating hovers near 31 percent. Policy moves designed to boost support nationally — renouncing Common Core, talking about ISIS in London — frustrate his constituents, who are still mad about budget cuts and his many absences. Other governors considering presidential runs, like Chris Christie and Scott Walker, have also seen approval ratings drop as they started courting voters in other states more aggressively than those back home.

For most of them, the 2016 election cycle will end with them not having many supporters nationally or back home — and perhaps no job to fall back on either.

One good thing to come out of Jindal’s presidential announcement? His kids will finally get to go back to Iowa. Jindal posted a video on Facebook of his wife and him telling their kids that he was running for president, which was shot using a camera that looked like it was borrowed from the FBI. Like us, the Jindal children assumed this was coming. The kids grew far more excited when they learned that this meant returning to Iowa, which they fondly remembered as the land of great popcorn.

I had to tell a few people first. But I want you to be next. I’m running for President of the United States of America. Join me: http://www.bobbyjindal.com/announcement/
